Island to island swimrun - FAQ

Is this a individual race?

Yes, Skär till skär swimrun is a individual swimrun.

What gear do I need?

Mandatory equipment

  • Swim cap. A visible swim cap that must be worn on the head during each swim leg. We will provide one on race day.

  • Whistle. All participants must carry a whistle that can be used to attract the attention of race officials in case of emergency, especially during swim sections.

  • Wetsuit
A wetsuit is mandatory to ensure sufficient thermal protection during the race. Water temperatures are typically 15–19°C. We strongly recommend using a long-sleeved wetsuit with full-length legs and adequate neoprene thickness, based on your experience level and expected time in the water.

Insufficient thermal protection increases the risk of hypothermia, a serious condition requiring medical attention. Participants who expect to spend more than 2 hours on the course should wear a long-sleeved wetsuit with sufficient insulation.
Experienced and competitive participants may choose equipment appropriate to their abilities, but all participants are responsible for ensuring adequate warmth throughout the race.

Recommended equipment

  • Running shoes. Shoes with good support and grip are strongly recommended. The route mainly follows shores and rocky terrain, placing additional stress on feet and ankles.
Running shoes and studded shoes are allowed. Spiked shoes are not allowed.

  • Swimming goggles. Goggles greatly improve comfort during swim sections and make navigation in the water easier.

  • Ear plugs Ear plugs that reduce cold water entering the ears are recommended, as cold water exposure can affect balance and increase the risk of disorientation.

  • Hand paddles are allowed.

  • Pull buoy is allowed and recommended. Since swimming is done while wearing running shoes, which tend to pull the lower body down, additional flotation can be helpful. Here’s a video on how to attach the pull buoy to your thigh during the run.

An alternative is flotation pads worn in the socks.

  • Other flotation aid. We are not strict regarding flotation aids. Flotation vests or similar equipment may be used, provided they do not offer a competitive advantage over the equipment otherwise allowed by the rules.
If such equipment makes you feel safer, you are encouraged to use it. However, all participants must be able to swim independently. How can I attach the pull buoy to my thigh?

Please note that all equipment used at the start of the race must be carried throughout the entire course. Equipment may not be left anywhere along the route.

In case you choose to come to Brunskär with our boat transport at 10:30 or 11:30, you shall be in Korpoström well in advance before the boat departs. Your departure time is found in the order confirmation email.

If you arrive with your own car, please allow a bit more time to be on the safe side as the route has two ferries on the way after Pargas. If you arrive to Turku with a ferry from Sweden on Saturday morning you will make it in good time. You can park against a parking fee on a parking area close to the harbour, see map

Where does the boat service depart in Korpoström?

The boat service departs from the pier between the marina for small boats and the guest harbour, see map. In the nearby Archipelago center, you can have a cup of coffee or visit rest rooms before the boat departs.

How can I follow the race as a spectator?

The race has a digital timing service at https://www.brunskar.fi/resultat where we register four times along the route and the final time per participant.

Participants may bring spectators with them if you arrive to Brunskär by own boat. It is also possible to come by boat as spectators only, please note that we prioritise the best boat placements to race officials and participants. Please let us know in advance if you are arriving by own boat per email.

If you would like to come to Brunskär with our arranged boat service from Korpoström, we have a limited capacity reserved for this. Please reach out to us per email so that we can see how we can help you with this.

What happens if I am unable to participate?

The race registration is binding, and refunds are only issued if you have purchased cancellation insurance. We therefore do not issue refunds in cases such as illness or injury.

Registrations are not transferred to future years, as no decision has yet been made regarding future editions of the race.

However, you may give or sell your registration to another person via
https://www.brunskar.fi/swimrun/name-change , provided that any payment is arranged between the parties.

Can the race be cancelled?

Yes. Safety always comes first, and in the event of, for example, strong winds (guideline limit of 12 m/s, depending on wind direction), thunderstorms, fog, or a high presence of blue-green algae, the race management may decide to cancel the race.

We aim to make such decisions as early as possible and to inform participants as soon as a decision has been made.
